The 83 film starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, directed by Kabir Khan, has earned universally favourable reviews and excellent word of mouth since its release, but it does not appear to have translated into a positive response at the box office. While the collections aren’t bad by any means, considering the excitement, acclaim, and expense, not to mention the nostalgic theme and the popular mood it evokes, a lot more was expected. And it appears that this has stymied another movie on which the 83 – main actor Ranveer Singh, director Kabir Khan, and producer Sajid Nadiadwala – were scheduled to cooperate.

The trio of Ranveer Singh, Kabir Khan, and Sajid Nadiadwala were to rejoin for another film soon after 83, according to a well-placed source in the industry, and were already in talks regarding the script, which, according to said source, would have seen the former in a quadriplegic character. In fact, it was believed that an announcement would be made soon following the film’s release. However, word on the industry is that talks have come to a halt following the devastating box office failure of the sports drama, with Nadiadwala seriously considering whether he should reteam with the actor-director pair after the significant losses sustained.

The issue with 83 is that it did not perform well in mass pockets (read: tier 2 and 3 cities), where, surprisingly, audiences flocked to single screens and low-end multiplexes for a dubbed Telugu film like Pushpa during the same time frame, despite the fact that the Allu Arjun-starrer had released a week before the Ranveer Singh-starrer.

On the other hand, 83 the film has fared admirably in major cities, notably in high-end multiplexes, where Spider-Man: No Way Home and Pushpa have split the box office.
