Though Laapataa Ladies didn’t perform well at the box office, it became a massive hit on digital platforms, even beating the highly anticipated Animal in viewership. The film’s success on OTT proved its strong connection with audiences, despite its struggles in theatres. Critics praised Kiran’s direction and the film’s unique story.
Now, Kiran is turning her focus to her next big project.
Kiran Rao Expected To Direct A Supernatural Thriller Next
She recently shared that she has several scripts ready, but the supernatural thriller is the one she is most excited about. It’s a big shift from her previous work and promises to explore a new, exciting genre.
The new film has already sparked plenty of interest, not only for its genre but also because it will also be produced by Kiran’s ex-husband, Aamir Khan.

Aamir, who produced Laapataa Ladies and Dhobi Ghat, will bring his production expertise to this new venture, continuing their successful collaboration.
Additionally, Laapataa Ladies has achieved a major milestone. The film has been chosen as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars in the ‘Best Foreign Film’ category.
