Nandamuri Balakrishna‘s highly anticipated Akhanda 2 has wrapped up its opening weekend with a worldwide collection of Rs 76.50 crore. The film collected Rs 66.50 crore approximately in India and added another Rs 10 crore from overseas markets, giving it a solid start at the global box office.
On face value, these numbers are very good for an NBK starrer and rank among his biggest opening weekends ever. The film is a sequel to the highly appreciated original Akhanda, which became one of the first major blockbusters for the Telugu film industry in the post pandemic era. The actor and director duo also have a very strong track record together.
Saturday Shows Strong Holding Power
The most interesting part of Akhanda 2‘s weekend performance is how well the film held on Saturday. Despite concerns from mixed audience reports, the movie showed strong holding power on its second day. This was a positive sign that the core fan base was turning up in big numbers regardless of the reviews.
However, Sunday did not push as high as it could have. The collections on Sunday stayed on par with Saturday, showing almost no growth in most territories except Andhra Pradesh. This means the film did not get the big Sunday jump that blockbusters usually enjoy.
Territorial Performance And Breakdown
The Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana led the collections with Rs 55.25 crore. Within this, Nizam contributed Rs 21.25 crore, Ceded added Rs 10.75 crore, and Andhra collected Rs 23.25 crore. Coastal Andhra saw the best trend among all regions.
Karnataka brought in Rs 7.50 crore, while Tamil Nadu added Rs 2.50 crore. The rest of India contributed Rs 1.25 crore to the total. On the overseas front, North America led with USD 750,000, and the rest of the world added another USD 350,000.
What The Numbers Really Mean
While these are good numbers on the surface, the expectations from Akhanda 2 were much higher. The brand value of the original film, combined with the successful track record of the actor and director team, had created huge anticipation. The opening day collection in particular was considered underwhelming given these high expectations.
The film will now need very strong weekday holds to justify its budget and reach the blockbuster status that the original Akhanda achieved.
