After years of silence, pauses, and lingering curiosity around Gorkha, Akshay Kumar has finally given the project its clearest and most decisive update yet. The actor has confirmed that the much-discussed film, once announced with considerable buzz, is no longer being made, ending a chapter that had remained unresolved since its unveiling.
Akshay shared the update during a recent fan interaction held ahead of the release of Bhooth Bangla. When asked about the status of Gorkha, he replied, “Nahi Gorkha movie nahi ban rahi hai, kisine abhi poocha hai.” With that brief but direct statement, the actor put to rest one of the longest-running question marks around his slate.
Akshay Kumar Finally Closes The Door On Gorkha
Gorkha was announced in October 2021 as a collaboration between Aanand L Rai’s Colour Yellow Productions and Cape of Good Films. National Award winning filmmaker Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan was attached to direct the biographical war drama, with Akshay set to play Major General Ian Cardozo of the 5th Gorkha Rifles. The first look had drawn immediate attention, positioning the film as a serious military story with a prominent star and a compelling real-life figure at its center.
Its journey, however, soon became complicated. In 2023, Aanand L Rai had addressed the film’s uncertain status and said, “Yes, it is true. We are not making this film for now. There are technical issues. There are factual clarifications that need to be made.” That comment had suggested a halt rather than a conclusion. Akshay’s latest confirmation has now shut it completely.
The update carries weight because Gorkha was not just another announcement that faded quietly. It had a distinctive premise rooted in the life and service of Ian Cardozo, a decorated Indian Army officer remembered for his role in the 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars. With Akshay fronting the film and Aanand L Rai attached as producer, it had instantly stood out in the Hindi film space.
What This Means For Akshay Kumar’s Current Lineup
With Gorkha now officially out, the focus turns fully to the projects Akshay is actively steering ahead. That shift feels especially relevant at a time when the actor continues to maintain one of the busiest lineups in Hindi cinema, moving between comedy, drama, and larger commercial entertainers.
In the past few years, Akshay’s releases have included Housefull 5, OMG 2 in 2023, where he played a divine messenger in the courtroom social drama, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan in 2024, and Sarfira in 2024. He also appeared in Khel Khel Mein in 2024. Looking ahead, Bhooth Bangla remains one of his confirmed upcoming films, keeping him firmly in the conversation as he reshapes his slate after drawing the curtain on Gorkha.
