In a massive announcement for movie lovers, superstar Akshay Kumar has officially confirmed that he will be playing a negative role in his next film, Haiwaan. The Priyadarshan directorial is the official Hindi remake of the highly acclaimed 2016 Malayalam blockbuster, Oppam.
This is a rare occasion where fans will get to see the Khiladi of Bollywood embrace his dark side. The confirmation came during a recent event where the actor spoke about his initial hesitation in taking up the villainous character.
Akshay Kumar And Saif Ali Khan Reunite After 17 Years
The excitement for Haiwaan is sky-high as it brings back one of the most loved duos of the 90s. Akshay Kumar will be facing off against Saif Ali Khan, as the two actors reunite on the big screen after a long gap of 17 years. In the film, Saif will step into the shoes of superstar Mohanlal from the original, playing a visually impaired caretaker who gets caught up in a murder investigation. Akshay will play the menacing villain of the story, the “Haiwaan” (Beast), a role originally played by Samuthirakani.
Akshay’s Hesitation About Playing A Villain
At the recent FICCI FRAMES 2025 event, Akshay Kumar revealed that he was in two minds about playing a negative character. He shared his dilemma, stating, “I am doing a film where I play a negative character. I was wondering whether I should do it or not. The film is called ‘Haiwaan’, but in the end, I lose. The Haiwaan loses.” The actor discussed this with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, who encouraged him to take the role. Fadnavis praised Akshay’s versatility and wisely noted, “Even in films where the villain loses, the character often leaves a bigger impact than the hero.”
What We Know About Haiwaan
Haiwaan is being directed by the master filmmaker Priyadarshan, who has delivered numerous hits with Akshay Kumar in the past. The original film, Oppam, was a huge success, and expectations are massive for its Hindi adaptation. The film is already on the shooting floors, and the makers are incredibly excited about the project, especially the on-screen clash between the two lead actors after such a long time.
