About This Untitled Film

The film is based on real events and is adapted from the book The Case That Shook the Empire, written by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat.

The book describes a defamation case filed by Michael O’Dwyer, who was the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab at the time, against Sankaran Nair. The trial lasted over five-and-a-half weeks in London and was affected by racial bias, with the judge and jury favouring O’Dwyer. C. Sankaran Nair was a key figure in India’s freedom struggle.

His resignation in protest after the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy in 1919 was crucial. It led to the repeal of martial law and press restrictions in Punjab and the formation of the Hunter Commission.

Karan Johar has expressed the significance of this story. He said, “Sankaran Nair’s bravery ignited the freedom struggle across the country and is a testament to the strength of fighting for truth.”

The film aims to highlight that bravery and the impact of Nair’s legal battle against colonial rule. It will portray the courage needed to stand up to an empire while seeking justice.
