Alia Bhatt’s move into the Tumbbad universe has officially begun on set, giving the sequel one of its biggest momentum boosts yet. After her casting announcement sparked immediate curiosity, the actor has now started shooting for Tumbbad 2, joining Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a film that is already shaping up as a major expansion of the cult horror property.
Set photographs from the ongoing schedule have only sharpened the film’s eerie pull. Alia was seen in a casual look, dressed in an oversized striped shirt with her hair tied in a high ponytail, posing with members of the crew. The current leg of production includes sequences mounted around a river and an old fort, details that sit perfectly within the shadowy, folklore-rooted atmosphere that defined the first film.
Alia Steps Into The Tumbbad Universe
Alia has now officially started production on the sequel after being introduced as a new face in the franchise in July 2026. Marking her arrival, Sohum Shah had shared on social media, “The world of Tumbbad expands, a new chapter takes shape, we are delighted to welcome @aliaabhatt to the cast of #Tumbbad2.”
Her casting is especially notable because Tumbbad 2 gives Alia her first full-fledged horror outing, placing one of Hindi cinema’s most watched stars inside a world built on dread, mythology and moral decay. With Sohum Shah returning at the centre and Nawazuddin Siddiqui also part of the ensemble, the sequel now carries a far more intriguing star dynamic than a conventional follow-up.
A Bigger Canvas For The Sequel
Directed by Adesh Prasad and fronted by Sohum Shah as actor-producer, Tumbbad 2 is expanding the mythology established in Tumbbad while continuing to explore greed, fear and the darker impulses of human nature. The sequel is mounting that ambition on a much larger visual scale, without stepping away from the unsettling thematic core that made the original stand out.
That ambition is visible in the production design itself. For the initial shoot, the team has constructed a sprawling Mumbai set spread across roughly seven to eight acres, built to resemble an entire city. The theatrical release has also been locked for December 3, 2027. Earlier, Sohum Shah had teased the film with the line, “A sinful past, an ominous future. The hunger rises, the legacy of greed continues… Mark your calendars #Tumbbad2 arrives on 3.12.2027.” As the franchise grows in scope, Alia’s entry also arrives at a particularly interesting point in her own screen journey.
Why This Casting Feels Timely For Alia Bhatt
Over the past few years, Alia has balanced mainstream scale with performance-driven choices, from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and the Netflix release Heart of Stone in 2023 to Jigra in 2024. Her next confirmed big-screen title is Alpha, the female-led Yash Raj Films spy thriller, while Love & War remains another major announced theatrical project in her lineup. That makes Tumbbad 2 feel less like a one-off detour and more like a smart genre pivot in a phase where she is clearly widening her screen identity.
