Amazon Prime Video Cancels Jana Nayagan OTT Deal As Vijay Film Remains Stuck In Censor Row

Vijay’s much-discussed Jana Nayagan has hit another major snag, and this one hurts beyond just release planning. With the film’s theatrical launch still in limbo amid an unresolved certification issue, Amazon Prime Video has now cancelled its post-theatrical streaming deal for the project, pulling out of what was described as a Rs. 110 crore agreement.

The development comes at a time when Jana Nayagan was already under intense scrutiny due to a prolonged CBFC-related delay, turning the film’s timeline into a moving target for everyone involved, from exhibitors to digital partners.

Latest Update: Amazon Prime Video Backs Out Of The Jana Nayagan Deal

As per the latest confirmed update, Amazon Prime Video, which had acquired the post-theatrical streaming rights of Jana Nayagan, has now backed out of the agreement since the film has no confirmed theatrical release date in sight.

The film, which was earlier being positioned for a Pongal 2026 release window, was postponed indefinitely after its certification process ran into trouble. The producers were earlier informed that Jana Nayagan would receive a ‘UA 16+’ certificate after an all-clear dated December 29. However, on January 5, 2026, the makers were notified that the film had been referred to a Revising Committee. The reasons cited for the re-censoring included an alleged complaint connected to religious sentiments and the film’s portrayal of armed forces.

With the clearance not arriving, the makers collectively decided to push the film indefinitely, a move that has now directly impacted its OTT trajectory too.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay in the lead, with Pooja Hegde as the female lead and Bobby Deol playing the antagonist. The supporting cast includes Prakash Raj and Mamitha Baiju. The film’s Hindi-dubbed version has been titled Jan Neta.

Vijay’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Over the past few years, Vijay has remained a consistent theatrical force. He was last seen in Leo (2023), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which arrived as one of the most talked-about Tamil releases of the year. Before that, he headlined Varisu (2023), directed by Vamshi Paidipally, and the action entertainer Beast (2022), directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.

As of March 2026, Jana Nayagan remains Vijay’s key pending film, with its release dependent on the outcome of the ongoing certification process and the film’s eventual return to the release calendar.
