In a poetic and concise manner, Bhansali depicted a realm shrouded in perpetual gloom where light miraculously finds its way. It’s the aspirations of a teacher, and behold, the marvel of a student. The film shows courageous strides from darkness to light. The journey from night to day is a remarkable account of a mundane existence.

A Timeless Classic Tale Of Teacher And Student

An eccentric tutor (Bachchan) turns around the life of a young woman (Rani) after she becomes prone to violent outbursts due to a childhood ailment that leaves her unable to see, hear, or communicate. As the film progresses, Rani’s character Michelle, a deaf and blind woman, forms a bond with Debraj (Bachchan), an alcoholic teacher who later develops Alzheimer’s disease.

Black Won Numerous Awards

Inspiration Behind Black

About the film, it all started in the 1990s, when Bhansali met a number of physically handicapped children on set of Khamoshi: The Musical. The life and autobiography of campaigner Helen Keller, published in 1903 as The Story of My Life served as the inspiration for the narrative.
