Andaz Apna Apna Re-Release Beats New Release Ground Zero In Advance Booking —Here’s How This Cult Comedy Fared On Day 1!

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan’s cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna returns to theatres after 31 years, but Day 1 box office figures reveal a neutral start despite strong nostalgia pull.

A Cult Classic Returns To Cinemas, But Did Audiences Show Up With It?

A cult classic made a return to cinemas, but did audiences return with it? The well-loved 1994 comedy Andaz Apna Apna featuring Aamir Khan and Salman Khan made its theatrical return on April 25, 2025 — allowing for nostalgia, memes, and Crime Master Gogo to be experienced fresh in pop culture once again. But if the initial box office reports are to be believed, the film’s comeback may be more teja main hoon, mark idhar hai than blockbuster buzz.

As per box office numbers, the film registered a neutral to low start on Day 1, and occupancy was only around 8–10% for cineplexes in major cities. While fanfare for the film was visible in some areas, particularly in Mumbai and Delhi, the sentiment was more quirky than winning.

Aamir & Salman’s Comic Gold Returns, But Can It Recapture Theatrical Magic?

Andaz Apna Apna has long had a cult status based on its quirky characters, classic dialogues, and extensively memeable material. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film was originally a box office underperformer, only earning around ₹6 crores in 1994. It later found its place in pop culture through television repeats, VHS, and DVD culture.

The re-release in 2025 was both a move steeped in nostalgia and a soft litmus test to see whether the Gen-Z audience might submit itself to this kind of old-school madness in theatres. The early numbers have come out a little underwhelming, but trade pundits are hopeful that word-of-mouth could ramp up substantial incremental numbers over the weekend.

As an aside, the film’s re-release coincided with Andaz Apna Apna’s 31st anniversary, and many single-screen theatres in Mumbai and Pune reported full-house late evening screenings.

Limited Screens, Loyal Fans, and the Meme Energy Remains

Despite the early slow start, Andaz Apna Apna’s measuring stick is not merely box office. This film holds purely cultural legendary status. Whether “Do dost ek hi pyjama mein cricket khelte hain” or other one-liners, the film has become a permanent fixture in comedic vernacular.

Exhibitors put it plainly: some diehard fans were there to watch the movie, many showing up in cosplay as the characters and some mouthing lines from the film during the screening.

The re-release model utilised:

  • Limited screen count
  • Tie-ups with select multiplex chains
  • Nostalgia marketing on social media (primarily X and Instagram reels)

Box Office Verdict: Cult Status Unbroken, Business Steady

Day 1 early estimates come in at ₹25–30 lakhs nett, mostly from metro circuits. Not an eye-popping number, but ones that were hardly expected to be mainstream given the niche appeal and retro style of this re-release.

It will likely get a weekend bump with family audiences as well as fans of Amar, Prem, Teja, and, of course, Gogo, who’ll be lining up to revisit the madness.
