Apne 2, the much awaited sequel to the 2007 family drama, is being completely rewritten after the demise of veteran actor Dharmendra on November 24, 2025. Producer Deepak Mukut has confirmed that the film starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Karan Deol will now be made as a heartfelt tribute to the late superstar who had a pivotal role in the original script.
Imagining the world of Apne without Dharmendra is incredibly difficult not only for his millions of fans but also for the filmmakers. After the veteran actor’s passing, director Anil Sharma had initially indicated in a media interaction that the sequel might be shelved. However, the latest update brings hope as the team has decided to move forward with significant changes to honor Dharmendra’s legacy.
Dharmendra Was Excited About The Sequel
Producer Deepak Mukut revealed to a leading publication that he had narrated the complete script to Dharmendra just a few months before his passing. The legendary actor was extremely excited about reuniting with his sons on the silver screen and was particularly thrilled about sharing screen space with his grandson Karan Deol for the first time in a full fledged role.
Mukut shared, “Dharamji was very excited about the sequel. It was one of his wishes to make Apne 2 with his children. We are reworking the script now, which will be told from the point of view of Sunny and Bobby’s characters. There will be some changes as Dharamji is no more, and we’ll miss him dearly.”
Film Will Be Producer’s Tribute To The Legend
The producer emphasized that if he cannot make a movie with Dharmendra, he can at least pay his respects to him through this film. “Apne 2 will be made and it will be a tribute to Dharamji,” Mukut stated firmly. The team is currently working on incorporating Dharmendra’s character in some way to keep his presence alive in the narrative.
The sequel will continue the story of the original film, which told the emotional tale of Baldev Singh Choudhary, a former boxer who hoped to regain his lost glory through his sons. The next edition will take this legacy forward with Karan Deol being introduced as Angad’s son, continuing the family’s boxing tradition across three generations.
Confusion Over Shelving Announcement
Interestingly, when director Anil Sharma announced that the sequel might be shelved, it created confusion among fans. However, Mukut clarified that work on the film is very much ongoing. “I don’t know why Anil said it. When I asked him, he flatly denied having said that the sequel is shelved,” revealed the producer.
Apne holds a special place in Bollywood history as it was the first film that saw Dharmendra share screen space with both his sons Sunny and Bobby together. The trio later appeared in the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise, which had three instalments and became a celebration of the Deol family’s star power.
