Devika Rani Choudhuri and Himanshu Rai were a Bengali couple who met and married in London in the late 1920s. They returned to India in 1934, where Himanshu Rai established a production studio named Bombay Talkies, partnering with certain other people. Bombay Talkies was a legendary film studio of the 1930s and 1940s that launched actors like Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, and Madhubala. It was also the studio that introduced India to international filmmaking technology.
Devika Rani was one of the founders of Bombay Talkies along with Himanshu Rai and Rajnarayan Dube. Devika Rani is widely acknowledged as the first lady of Indian cinema.
