Assam Mourns A Legend: State Declares 3-Day Mourning For Zubeen Garg; Final Film With Victor Banerjee To Release Posthumously

The nation is in shock and mourning after the sudden and tragic passing of legendary singer, composer, and filmmaker Zubeen Garg at the age of 52. The cultural icon passed away in Singapore while attending a festival. As his home state of Assam and fans across the world grieve this immense loss, details have also emerged about his final, unreleased film.

Zubeen’s final work, a Hindi political thriller titled Chakra, will be released posthumously next month. The film sees him not only in a lead role but also as the director.

Assam Declares State Mourning

As a mark of respect for the beloved artist, the Assam government has declared a three-day period of state mourning from September 20 to 22, 2025. During this time, all official entertainment and ceremonial functions have been cancelled. The government expressed its “deep shock and sorrow” at the passing of the cultural icon. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is personally overseeing the arrangements to bring Zubeen’s mortal remains from Singapore back to Guwahati, with their arrival expected on Sunday morning.

A Final Film With Victor Banerjee

While the world mourns his loss, fans will get to see Zubeen Garg on screen one last time. His final project, Chakra, is a political thriller where he stars alongside veteran Bengali actor Victor Banerjee. Zubeen also directed the film, marking his posthumous debut as a director and actor in Bollywood. The film is reportedly complete and is scheduled for a release in October 2025, serving as a final tribute to his multifaceted talent.

‘The Heavens Are Intoxicated With His Charm’

Victor Banerjee, who lost a dear friend and co-star, shared a heartfelt tribute. “I just completed a film with Zubeen where he is also my co-star. It will be released next month,” he said. Praising Zubeen’s acting skills, he added, “I enjoyed watching him act as much as the world enjoys him singing. Zubeen was a great son of our soil.” Expressing his grief, Banerjee shared a poignant message: “I shall miss him. What a waste of greatness! The heavens are intoxicated with his charm now. May he stay singing in peace.”
