Avatar: Fire and Ash opened with Rs 22 crore gross (Rs 18 crore nett) approximately at the Indian box office on Friday. This places the film as the highest opening day grosser of the year and the eighth highest opening day grosser ever for a Hollywood release in India. The James Cameron directed sequel has managed to create solid buzz despite mixed advance bookings.
Within the franchise, the original Avatar debuted as the then third-largest Hollywood opener in India, trailing only 2012 and Spider-Man 3. Meanwhile, Avatar: The Way of Water went on to register the second-highest opening, behind only Avengers: Endgame. The latest installment Avatar: Fire and Ash has performed well but falls short of its immediate predecessor.
Avengers Endgame Continues To Stand Tall
Avengers: Endgame continues to stand tall as the biggest opening day grosser for Hollywood, almost seven years after its release, and it does so with a considerable margin. The Avatar films were probably the strongest contenders to challenge it. The Way of Water managed record numbers in South India but was a lot weaker in the Hindi circuits, which kept it short.
Avatar: Fire and Ash, meanwhile, is not even in the picture when it comes to challenging the Endgame record. The film opened at Rs 22 crore gross, which is less than half of what Endgame collected on its opening day. This shows just how dominant the Marvel film was during its release.
What About Future Hollywood Releases
The next challenge to the Avengers: Endgame record is probably going to come from the Avengers themselves, this time around next year, with Avengers: Doomsday. Had the film arrived in 2022 or 2023, it would have been a near-certain record-breaker. However, given the current state of the MCU and audience fatigue with superhero films, it is not a sure thing anymore.
Industry observers note that Hollywood releases have been facing challenges in India lately. While the biggest franchises still manage to open well, sustaining that momentum has become increasingly difficult. Avatar: Fire and Ash will need strong word of mouth and repeat viewings to match the lifetime collections of The Way of Water.
Avatar Fire And Ash Performance Compared To Franchise
The performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash shows that while the franchise remains strong, it has not grown in India the way some expected. The opening day numbers are lower than The Way of Water, which suggests that the novelty factor may be wearing off slightly. However, the film still managed to be the biggest Hollywood opener of 2025, which is a significant achievement.
The film’s success in South India will be crucial for its overall performance. The previous Avatar film performed exceptionally well in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam versions. If Fire and Ash can replicate that success, it could still end up with a respectable lifetime total despite the lower opening.
About Avatar Fire And Ash
Avatar: Fire and Ash is directed by James Cameron and is the third installment in the Avatar franchise. The film continues the story of Jake Sully and Neytara on the planet Pandora. The movie has been released in multiple formats including 3D, IMAX 3D, and other premium formats across India. It faces competition from the Hindi film Dhurandhar which is having a historic run at the box office.
