Thamma: A Vampire Rom-Com in the Horror Comedy Universe
Thamma is officially the fifth installment in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), joining its forerunners Stree, Bhediya, Munjya, and Stree 2. Yet unlike its predecessors, Thamma leans more into romance and mythology than pure horror or comedy. The film is slated for theatrical release 21 October 2025, coinciding with Diwali.
The Telugu trailer offers a tantalizing mix: glimpses of vampiric transformation, supernatural menace, and tender moments between Ayushmann and Rashmika’s characters. Ayushmann’s character begins to undergo physical changes, fangs, regenerative ability while Rashmika’s character warns about the dangers of their cross-world romance. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the antagonist Yakshasan, and Paresh Rawal is seen as Ayushmann’s father, adding gravitas to the ensemble cast. The trailer also confirmed a surprise cameo by Varun Dhawan reprising his Bhediya role, creating crossover appeal within the universe.
The film credits include direction by Aditya Sarpotdar, with the writing team comprising Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew, and Arun Falara. The soundtrack is composed by Sachin–Jigar, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The Telugu version is being presented in collaboration with Suresh Productions.
Why This Thamma Telugu Launch
Launching a Telugu trailer and exclusive song in Hyderabad underscores the film’s ambition to cross linguistic boundaries. For Thamma, the Telugu version isn’t just a dub, but a core part of its marketing strategy. This event also positions the film to tap into both Bollywood and Tollywood audiences, a bridge that Rashmika, in particular, is well suited to traverse.
The choice of Hyderabad for such a high-profile reveal suggests strategic outreach to the south Indian market, validating the trend of pan-India launches becoming standard for big films. Whether this translates into stronger box office performance in Telugu states remains to be seen.
With Thamma promising a fresh blend of romantic supernatural drama, the Hyderabad event marks an early high in its publicity campaign. As Diwali approaches, all eyes will be on whether this bold fusion will resonate with lovers of horror, myth, and romance alike.
