India’s horror calendar has taken a sharp turn just as the genre is enjoying a rare theatrical hot streak. Backrooms, the A24 liminal horror film directed by Kane Parsons, will now arrive in Indian cinemas on June 12, 2026, through PVR INOX Pictures, after being pushed by two weeks from its earlier May 29 window.
Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the shift was made in the wake of the strong box office onslaught of Obsession, the Curry Barker horror breakout that released in India on May 29 and has continued to command attention among urban multiplex audiences.
Pvr Inox Gives Backrooms A Cleaner Horror Window
PVR INOX has now locked the new India theatrical date for Backrooms. The distributor has also begun positioning the film directly to horror fans online, with the official campaign stating, “Fall out of reality and into the Backrooms. The A24 horror film of 2026 is in cinemas June 12.”
The caption further added, “Kane Parsons directs. Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor star. The yellow rooms are waiting.”
The revised plan gives Backrooms a clearer theatrical runway after Obsession turned into a surprise conversation driver at the Indian box office. By its sixth day in India, Obsession had collected ₹15.26 crore net and ₹18.12 crore gross. Globally, the film crossed $148 million against a $750,000 budget, making it one of the year’s standout horror success stories.
Inside Kane Parsons’ Liminal Horror Universe
Backrooms is a 2026 American science fiction psychological horror film directed and co-scored by Kane Parsons in his feature directorial debut. Written by Will Soodik, the film is based on Parsons’ viral web series and is inspired by the internet creepypasta phenomenon built around endless, unsettling liminal spaces.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. Its story follows Clark, a furniture store owner, and Mary, his therapist, as they discover a strange dimension of seemingly endless liminal spaces through the basement of his store.
Backed by A24, the film premiered at the Aero Theatre in Los Angeles on May 7, 2026, and was released in the United States on May 29, 2026. Its production companies include North Road Films, 21 Laps Entertainment, Atomic Monster, Phobos and Oddfellows Entertainment.
For Indian viewers, the shift keeps Backrooms firmly inside a lively horror cycle while giving it space from Obsession. For fans who have followed Parsons’ original online universe, the wait is now slightly longer, but the yellow rooms are officially on their way to cinemas.
