The rollout for Batwara 1947 has found a fresh emotional hook. The makers have unveiled a new poster for the Rajkumar Santoshi directorial, placing Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta at the centre of a story shaped by Partition, displacement and moral conviction. With the film set for a theatrical release on August 14, 2026, the latest artwork sharpens the campaign’s tone just a month before it arrives in cinemas.
The text shared with the poster leaves little doubt about that intent: “When the world chose sides, HE chose dharma.” The release announcement adds, “Watch #Batwara1947 in cinemas this Partition Day, 14th August.” The social post also foregrounds the film’s marquee names with the lines “Starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta,” “Produced by Aamir khan,” and “Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi.” While the poster copy spotlights Aamir Khan in producer credit, the full production banner for the film includes Aparna Purohit alongside Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions.

The new poster arrives after the project’s title shift from Lahore 1947 to Batwara 1947, a move that tied the film’s identity even more closely to its historical setting. The visual continues that positioning, foregrounding the human cost of division while framing Deol’s character as the moral centre of the drama.
Directed and co written by Santoshi, Batwara 1947 stars Deol, Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare and Kanikka Kapur. It is backed by Aamir Khan Productions, with Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit attached as producers, and PVR Inox Pictures handling distribution. The film’s music has been composed by A. R. Rahman, while Santosh Sivan serves as cinematographer.
The story is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. Set in the aftermath of Partition in 1947, the drama follows people whose lives are torn apart by displacement and communal rupture. At its heart is a refugee family and an elderly woman who refuses to leave her Lahore home, giving the film an intimate emotional lens within one of the subcontinent’s most defining historical moments.
That emotional terrain also makes the casting especially resonant, arriving at a moment when both its leads carry very different kinds of screen nostalgia into the project.

For Sunny Deol, Batwara 1947 lands during a renewed big screen phase that has brought him back into the centre of theatrical conversation. Over the last four years, he moved from Chup: Revenge of the Artist in 2022 to the blockbuster success of Gadar 2 in 2023, followed by Jaat in 2025 and Border 2, which reached cinemas on January 23, 2026. Against that run, Santoshi’s period drama looks less like a routine follow up and more like a film designed to tap into Deol’s long standing screen persona of conviction, intensity and wounded patriotism. His confirmed upcoming slate also includes Ikka, an unreleased Netflix film, and Gabru.
For Preity Zinta, the film carries a different charge. Batwara 1947 marks her return to a prominent Hindi theatrical role after a long gap, giving the project an added layer of audience curiosity beyond its historical subject. Current filmography listings also mention Vibe, co starring Kunal Kemmu, as a project in development, but it is Batwara 1947 that places her back in the centre of a major mainstream release.
