Bollywood’s Independence Day weekend in 2026 has turned into a star face-off. Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 and Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 have both locked August 14, 2026, for their theatrical arrival, setting up a clash that blends patriotic-period drama with cult franchise nostalgia.
The face-off also has a throwback edge. Sunny and Emraan had clashed at the box office in 2007 too, when Big Brother and Awarapan arrived on the same day. Nearly two decades later, the actors are heading back into the same release-date arena with two very different films.
Batwara 1947 And Awarapan 2 Lock August 14
Sunny Deol announced the first look and date of Batwara 1947 on social media, writing, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage. Watch #Batwara1947 in theatres from 14th August 2026.”
Awarapan 2 had already reserved the same Independence Day weekend slot. While announcing the film, Emraan Hashmi wrote, “Producer Vishesh Bhatt invites you to explore the world of Awarapan 2. Keep yourself free this Independence Day weekend and join us on Aug 14, 2026, when Awarapan 2 arrives in cinemas.”
Producer Vishesh Bhatt described the sequel’s scale and emotional ambition in a press note, saying, “Awarapan is an emotion so large that it’s meant for the big screen. It also presents exotic settings and large scale sequences but fundamentally it’s built on our core principles of layered storytelling with powerful characters and rich music. Emraan felt the angst of Shivam so deeply that he stepped into character in a heartbeat. And with Disha Patani joining us, the world of the film opened up to new possibilities,”
What Both Films Bring To The Screen
Batwara 1947, previously titled Lahore 1947, is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions. The period drama stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol, and is set against the Partition of India, with the first look hinting at fear, family and survival amid communal violence.
Awarapan 2 is directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films. The romantic action drama brings Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam, with Disha Patani joining the franchise for a sequel built around redemption, music and emotional conflict.
