After creating quite the buzz earlier this month, when it faced scrutiny over a possible abrupt OTT release, the comic caper is primed for its big screen release on May 23, 2025, following the legal tussle between Maddock Films and PVRInox.
Rajkummar Rao’s Viral Video Stokes Up Promo Activity
Social media has been a big part of the film’s marketing, and Rajkummar Rao on Instagram has hit the promotional buzz out of the park with a quirky video that engaged fans right away. The video features the actor barely able to get through the haldi ceremony before he is trapped in a chain of wedding farce misadventures.

In addition to Rao, the family entertainer stars Wamiqa Gabbi and is directed by Karan Sharma in his debut. The casting of Wamiqa and Rao together—two of the more diverse actors of their generation—already raised some eyebrows.

Bhool Chuk Maaf: Drama Behind the Legal Scene
The movie made headlines earlier in May when producer Dinesh Vijan suddenly announced a direct-to-OTT release exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, citing geopolitical sensitivities with the Indian and Pakistani tensions.
The announcement on May 22nd—with the release planned for May 23rd—triggered a backlash from exhibitors, particularly PVRInox, who proceeded to file a ₹60 crore lawsuit for breach of contract.
On May 14, 2023, the Delhi High Court ruled to issue a directive to release the film in theatres on May 23 and issued a special supplemental ruling of a two-week OTT launch—a vibrant change from the standard eight-week exclusive theatrical release.
“This is a unique one-off court directed exemption.
The standard eight-week exclusivity provision will remain for other Hindi releases,”
a trade source commented.
Significantly, PVRInox has now withdrawn the ₹60 crore claim for damages, clearing the way for promotion and release. A joint media statement from the parties is expected soon.

With legal obstacles now cleared and Rajkummar Rao launching promotions fully, Bhool Chuk Maaf is destined to be one of the most viewed Hindi theatrical releases of the month.
