The Bombay High Court has permanently stopped the release of Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, ruling in favour of filmmaker Karan Johar. The court stated that the film’s title and content violated his privacy, personality rights, and brand value.
Bombay HC Refuses To Lift Stay On Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar In Final Verdict
As per a HT report, Justice RI Chagla rejected the plea to lift the stay on the film’s release. The court ruled that the title directly linked the film to Johar, misleading the audience. It also noted that the filmmakers ignored Johar’s cease-and-desist notice.
Johar had approached the court in June 2024, arguing that his personal attributes such as his name and profession were used without permission. He stated, “Having intentionally used my name, the defendant has breached my personality rights, privacy rights, and infringed my brand value.”
The court had already stayed the release on June 13, 2024. However, in December 2024, Indiapride Advisory Pvt Ltd, the film’s producers, filed a countersuit asking for the stay to be lifted. They argued that Johar took too long to object and that the film did not directly use his name.
KJo Claimed Film Made Defamatory Remarks About Him
Karan Johar also claimed that the film contained defamatory remarks about him. He pointed out that it was classified as an “adult” film, which could damage his reputation if linked to his name.
The court sided with Johar and stated that simply modifying the film was not enough to avoid public confusion. “By such understanding, the respondents are destroying the concepts of intellectual property rights and brand name,” the court said.
Indiapride Advisory also argued that the film had already been approved by the Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC). However, the court dismissed this and ruled that a CBFC certificate did not stop Johar from taking legal action.
