Brahmastra 2 is back in active play, with Ayan Mukerji moving ahead on the sequel’s next big partnership and bringing Namit Malhotra into the conversation at a crucial stage for the franchise. After earlier studio discussions fell through, the search for a new backing partner has now turned to one of Indian cinema’s most formidable VFX driven producers, putting Ranbir Kapoor’s fantasy universe firmly back on the industry radar.
Latest Update On Brahmastra 2
That renewed movement also gives the sequel a clearer sense of direction after months of industry speculation around who would eventually come aboard to help mount the next chapter. Starlight Pictures Private Limited holds the intellectual property rights to the Brahmastra franchise and is leading the effort to set up the sequel at scale.
The banner is currently seeking a studio partner for Brahmastra 2, with Namit Malhotra in advanced talks to come on board. A source said, “Ayan Mukerji’s production house, Starlight Pictures Private Limited, was one of the producers of the first Brahmastra and the banner holds the rights to the film’s IP. Starlight will be producing Brahmastra 2 and is currently looking for a studio partner to come on board. The makers recently got in touch with Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus.”
Malhotra’s presence in these conversations is especially notable because he was already part of the ecosystem around the first film, Brahmastra Part One Shiva, which arrived in theatres on September 9, 2022. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film starred Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna, and was mounted as one of Hindi cinema’s most ambitious fantasy spectacles.
Why Namit Malhotra Fits The Brahmastra Universe
The fit is easy to understand. Brahmastra is a franchise built on scale, visual imagination and technical precision, and Malhotra’s work through Prime Focus has long been associated with exactly that kind of filmmaking ambition.
A second source said, “Incidentally, Prime Focus was also one of the producers of Brahmastra (2022). The company is among the best in the world when it comes to VFX, and its expertise has only grown further after working on Ramayana. Moreover, the Brahmastra franchise is also extremely VFX-heavy. Hence, Namit Malhotra coming on board would be a natural fit. However, nothing has been finalized yet, though advanced talks are underway.”
He is also producing Ramayana, the large scale mythological adaptation directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor. That makes his possible entry into Brahmastra 2 feel less like a surprise turn and more like a strategic alignment between a franchise that demands immersive world building and a producer known for delivering it.
Earlier Studio Talks That Did Not Move Ahead
Before Malhotra emerged as the latest serious contender, Brahmastra 2 had already travelled through a series of high profile conversations in its search for the right partner. Jio Studios was among the names in contention, but that association did not move ahead.
One source had said, “The makers were in discussions with Jio Studios to come on board as the studio partner for Brahmastra 2. However, those talks did not materialize and Jio has now decided against associating with the sequel. Interestingly, Star Studios was one of the key partners on the first Brahmastra. With Star’s entertainment business now part of JioStar, and Jio Studios also operating under the larger ecosystem, there was an expectation that the association could continue with the franchise. However, as things stand, neither Jio Studios nor Star Studios is involved with Brahmastra 2.”
That journey has only made the current phase more important. With the franchise now circling back to a collaborator already familiar with its scale and texture, the sequel appears to be inching closer to a more workable foundation.
Ayan Mukerji’s Recent And Upcoming Work
For Ayan Mukerji, Brahmastra 2 remains the defining follow up to Brahmastra Part One Shiva. He also directed War 2 for Yash Raj Films, expanding his space well beyond original fantasy and into one of Hindi cinema’s biggest action franchises.
That puts Mukerji in an unusually interesting position as a filmmaker balancing two very different blockbuster worlds, one born from his own mythological vision and the other anchored in an established spy universe. If these ongoing talks fall into place, Brahmastra 2 could finally become the project that pulls both his creative ambition and franchise planning into sharper motion.
