According to the annual report of Wikipedia, two Indian films, Jawan and Pathaan, were among the top 10 most-read articles on the online encyclopedia in 2023. Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, ranked eighth with over 21 million views, while Pathaan, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, ranked tenth with over 19 million views.
“The most-viewed Wikipedia articles of 2023 tell the story of you and society at large seeking out knowledge about our ever-changing world from the world’s largest encyclopedia,” the Wikimedia foundation said.

Pathaan and Jawan only Indian films to feature in top 10 Wikipedia articles
Among movies on the list, Wikimedia said not far behind the Christopher Nolan-directed hit Oppenheimer were two more films that shared wildly successful 2023 releases – ‘Pathaan‘ and ‘Jawan‘, which became two of the highest-grossing Hindi-language films of all time.
“Pathaan was released first in January 2023, and broke several box office records. Those accomplishments were short-lived, as Jawan surpassed them after its release in September. Both films featured Shah Rukh Khan as the main lead actor. Around their release dates, both films peaked at over one million views in a single day on English Wikipedia alone,” it said.
Jawan and Pathaan are both action thriller films starring Shah Rukh Khan that were released in 2023 and broke several box office records. Jawan, directed by Atlee, tells the story of a jailer who hijacks a metro train with a group of inmates to expose corruption and injustice in society. The film was praised for its cast performances, screenwriting, action sequences and musical score. Jawan grossed over ₹1,148 crore (US$140 million) worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film ever.
Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand, follows an exiled RAW agent who teams up with an ISI agent to stop a former RAW agent from unleashing a deadly virus on India. The film was the fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe and had a cameo appearance by Salman Khan as Tiger. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but was a commercial success. Pathaan grossed ₹1,050.30 crore (US$130 million) worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, and the sixth-highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
The popularity of Jawan and Pathaan on Wikipedia reflects the huge fan following of Shah Rukh Khan, who made his comeback to films after a four-year hiatus. The actor, who is also known as the King of Bollywood, has a global appeal and a loyal fan base. His films are known for their high production values, star power and entertainment quotient.
