CBFC Revamps Film Ratings For Indian Movies: Will Five New Categories Simplify Parental Choices?

CBFC has introduced five new film rating categories to help parents decide what’s suitable for their children.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has revamped its film rating system, introducing five new categories to help parents make better viewing choices for their children.

For decades, the CBFC followed a standardised certification process, but this change aims to offer clearer guidance on age-appropriate content.

CBFC Introduces 5 New Age-Based Categories For Indian Movies

The updated categories include U (suitable for all audiences), UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, and A (adults-only). Films in the U category are appropriate for viewers of all ages.

The UA categories—7+, 13+, and 16+—indicate content that is unrestricted but requires parental discretion for children below the specified ages.

For instance, a UA 7+ rating suggests the film is suitable for children aged seven and above, but younger viewers may need parental supervision.

The A category, on the other hand, is strictly for adults aged 18 and above.

Censor Board Was Working On This New Rating System For Years

According to the ETimes report, CBFC members revealed that this updated system was in development for years to address the need for a more nuanced classification process.

Previously, films with mature themes or graphic content were often grouped under broad categories, leading to misjudgements. The new ratings aim to fix this by ensuring films are accurately assessed based on age-appropriateness.

For example, a film with graphic violence might now fall under UA 16+, while a film exploring mature themes could be restricted to UA 13+. This classification helps distinguish content without overgeneralising its impact on viewers.

Filmmakers have often raised concerns about the lack of nuanced ratings in India, claiming that it sometimes hurt their creative vision or misrepresents their work. The CBFC’s new system seeks to bridge this gap, offering clarity to both creators and audiences.

While this change is a step forward, some wonder if it will fully address the challenges of categorising complex films.
