“No One Contacted Us”: Dadasaheb Phalke’s Grandson Slams SS Rajamouli Over Biopic; Praises Aamir Khan’s Team For Earnest Research

Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson slams SS Rajamouli for lack of family contact on Made in India; praises Aamir Khan–Rajkumar Hirani’s efforts.

A Biopic Face-Off? Aamir vs. Rajamouli On Screen Soon

As Bollywood is set to produce two different biopics on the monumental Dadasaheb Phalke, there has been a split, with Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, being disappointed with filmmaker SS Rajamouli and his team for not approaching the family before developing the project. In comparison, he commended Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s team for their diligence and honesty.

“Rajamouli Never Contacted Me”: Phalke’s Grandson Speaks Out

In a recent interview , Phalke’s grandson made his displeasure public. In discussing SS Rajamouli’s project Made In India (which was announced in 2023), Chandrashekhar Pusalkar stated:

“I have been hearing about Rajamouli’s project, but he never contacted me. No one also reached out to me on behalf of Rajamouli.
If someone is making a film on Phalke ji, I think, there is a family participation, as we know all the real stories…”

Chandrashekhar’s comments are made amid rumours that Jr NTR may be taking the lead in Rajamouli’s Made In India, which would be produced by Varun Gupta and SS Karthikeya.

“Aamir & Hirani’s Team Worked Hard For Trust”: Grandson Celebrates Biopic

In much contrast, Chandrashekhar expressed immense surprise, but also satisfaction, about the Aamir Khan-Rajkumar Hirani biopic, which was confirmed after the duo’s team collectively spent three years researching.

“Hindukush Bhardwaj from their team has been meeting me for three years. And I told him — you guys are working honest, go ahead. I have no objection.”

He also suggested Vidya Balan as the cast to play Saraswatibai Phalke and said that Aamir is a “serious fellow” and treats history with real respect.

With the arrival of both biopics drawing headlines, this raises serious questions around the ethics of telling someone’s life story.

  • On one side: Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani — back together after PK — are reportedly preparing to start prep in mid-2025 when Sitaare Zameen Par wraps.
  • On the other hand, SS Rajamouli’s Made in India — first announced in 2023 — still has not leaked facts around casting and production timelines.

BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict

Two film titans. One iconic subject. Only one group did their history homework.

The Dadasaheb Phalke biopic battle is heating up. Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s well-considered and respectful approach has already won over the family, though SS Rajamouli is a creative force to be reckoned with, so perhaps we will see him take a different tack in the end with this public company blunder.

For now, the audience – and historians – will be watching closely.
