The long-awaited Hindi adaptation of the Hollywood hit The Intern is finally set to see the light of day, but with a significant creative overhaul. After five years in development limbo, the project is being revived with a major casting change. Deepika Padukone, who was slated to star in the film, will now step away from the lead acting role. Instead, she will focus her efforts on producing the film, which stars the legendary Amitabh Bachchan.
A Project Plagued By Delays
The journey of The Intern‘s Hindi remake has been a tumultuous one since Deepika Padukone’s KA Productions acquired its rights in 2020. The film was initially announced with the late Rishi Kapoor in the role made famous by Robert De Niro. Following the veteran actor’s unfortunate passing, Amitabh Bachchan was roped in to fill the part, but the project continued to face setbacks.
A combination of the pandemic, scheduling conflicts, and Padukone’s maternity break kept the film from ever going into production. Despite having two of Bollywood’s biggest stars attached, the adaptation remained stalled, leaving fans to wonder if it would ever be made. Now, it appears the project is getting a complete logistical and creative reboot to finally get it on track.
Deepika Padukone’s New Focus as Producer
To get the film moving, Padukone has decided to shift her involvement from acting to exclusively producing. A source close to the development revealed that this strategic move is intended to get the film off the ground. “This time, Deepika will step away from acting in the film to serve solely as a producer, overseeing the creative and logistical reboot,” the source stated.
The team is now actively searching for a new leading lady to star opposite Bachchan in the role originally played by Anne Hathaway. This decision is reportedly part of Padukone’s larger ambition to expand her role as a creator in the industry. The source added that she aims to “explore her career further as a creator” and that The Intern is the first of five projects she plans to mount with a focus on telling “globally relevant stories.”
