Dhanush has blinked first in what was shaping up to be one of Tamil cinema’s biggest festive box office face-offs. The actor on Wednesday announced that OM will no longer arrive on October 16, choosing instead to move away from Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, which is locked for October 15, 2026. The decision also takes OM out of the Diwali race, with Dhanush making it clear that Suriya’s film had already claimed that festive corridor.
Dhanush Confirms Om Postponement
In his statement on X, Dhanush wrote, “In times like these, shifting the release of a film comes with its own set of challenges. Our superstar, Rajinikanth sir, the man whom we have all admired and worshipped over the years, has his film arriving on October 15, just a day before ours. Out of immense respect for him, we have decided to postpone the release of our film, OM, to a later date. At the same time, we will not be arriving for Diwali this year either, as Suriya sir’s film has already been announced for the same date.” The actor added, “In all fairness, they announced their date first, and we strongly believe that big films should have a mutual understanding and respect each other’s decisions, keeping the larger welfare of cinema and the industry in mind. We will announce our new release date very soon.”
The move carries an added layer of public interest because Dhanush was previously married to Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Rajinikanth’s daughter. Still, the statement itself framed the shift firmly as an industry-first call, with emphasis on release-date discipline and avoiding a collision between two star-led films.
What We Know About Om
OM: Chapter 1 Udhiram – The Blood Wood is a 2026 Tamil action thriller directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and stars Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela. The film is backed by Wunderbar Films and R Take Studios, with Sai Abhyankkar composing the music. The title suggests the launch of a larger story universe, though the makers have so far kept the plot under wraps.
The film had already built attention after its team’s strong National Award showing earlier this year, with Dhanush, Mammootty, Rajkumar Periasamy and editor R Kalaivanan all celebrating major wins linked to their recent work.
Dhanush’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Dhanush’s recent screen run has been packed across both acting and filmmaking. His 2024 theatrical release Captain Miller was followed by Kuberaa in 2025, directed by Sekhar Kammula and co-starring Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna. He also directed Idli Kadai, which released in 2025 under Wunderbar Films.
Looking ahead, OM now awaits a fresh release date, while Kara, directed by Vignesh Raja, is another confirmed Dhanush film lined up in 2026. That gives the actor a notably busy phase, balancing star vehicles with filmmaker-driven projects across genres.
