Dhanush has reportedly been served a legal notice seeking compensation of Rs 20 crore, reviving a long running dispute tied to a film commitment dating back to 2016. The matter involves Thenandal Films, which has alleged that a project planned with the actor filmmaker stalled after substantial pre production spending.
The notice has brought fresh attention to how extended development timelines, date allocations, and incomplete scripts can turn into high stakes legal battles in the film business, especially when large advances and talent commitments are involved.
Dhanush And Thenandal Films Dispute Explained
Thenandal Films has issued a legal notice to Dhanush through advocate A. Chidambaram, demanding compensation linked to a project that traces back to 2016. As per the allegations, Dhanush had been associated with a film titled Naan Rudhran under the banner but later exited.
The production house claims that while stepping away, Dhanush promised to direct and star in another film for Thenandal Films. Based on that assurance, the banner says it proceeded with preparations and spent nearly Rs 20 crore on advance payments and pre production expenses.
Allegations Of Script Delay And Date Diversion
The legal notice alleges that the project did not move forward because Dhanush failed to deliver a complete script even after years of development. The banner has also claimed that he diverted his dates to other films without completing the promised project.
According to the details cited in the notice, the company states that advances were paid to actors Nagarjuna and SJ Suryah, who were expected to be part of the film Dhanush was to direct.
What The Legal Notice Demands
Thenandal Films has asked Dhanush to respond within a week and confirm whether he will honour his earlier commitment by allocating dates by the end of 2025 to complete the film. If that does not happen, the banner has sought repayment of Rs 20 crore as compensation, along with an additional Rs 1 crore.
The notice reportedly warns of appropriate legal action if the issue is not resolved.
What Happens Next
At the time of writing, there has been no official public statement from Dhanush or his team addressing the legal notice. The next step will likely depend on whether the actor filmmaker replies within the stated window and whether both parties can reach an agreement on either completing the film or settling the claimed amount.
As this story develops, it is expected to have wider industry interest, given the scale of the alleged pre production spend and the long gap between the original commitment and the current legal escalation.
