Dhurandhar Trailer Features 65 Year Old Classic Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai Composed By Hrithik Roshan’s Grandfather: Shah Rukh Khan’s Favourite Song Was Inspired By Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Father

The first trailer of Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar dropped on Tuesday and left everyone stunned. After showcasing intense action and violence throughout the trailer, director Aditya Dhar ended it on a poetic and nostalgic note. The end credits rolled with the familiar lyrics “Na toh karwaan ki talaash hai”, instantly reminding older audiences of one of the most beloved qawwalis in Indian cinema history. The song Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai is now being reintroduced to a new generation through this film.

Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai was composed by legendary music director Roshan, the grandfather of actor Hrithik Roshan, for the 1960 film Barsaat Ki Raat. Written by the iconic lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, this 13-minute masterpiece was reportedly recorded over 24 hours. The song was sung by stalwarts like Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, SD Batish, and Sudha Malhotra. Anyone who has watched singing reality shows like Indian Idol will recognize this tune, as it is often performed during qawwali rounds.

The Controversial Origin Of The Song

However, like many other Hindi film songs from that era, Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai has a controversial past. It is said that producer R Chandra, who was the elder brother of lead actor Bharat Bhushan, initially approached composer Khayyam for the film. He asked Khayyam to create a qawwali based on the popular Pakistani qawwali Na Tu Butkade Ki Talab Mujhe, which was created by Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. Ustad Fateh Ali Khan was the father of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Khayyam refused to take on the project because he did not want to plagiarize someone else’s work. However, composer Roshan had no qualms about it and agreed to create the song. That is how Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai came into existence. Despite its controversial origins, the song became a timeless classic and is still remembered 65 years later.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Favourite Song

During the Netflix series The Roshans, Shah Rukh Khan revealed that Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai was his favourite song composed by Roshan. He said, “My favourite song is actually a qawali by him. I think I nearly know the whole qawwali if it is playing.” Singer Sonu Nigam also praised the composition, saying that there has never been another qawwali like this one before or after. He called it the work of a real genius.

Roshan’s late wife, Ira Nagrath, shared that the composer had immense confidence in the song. When she questioned why he made a 15-minute qawwali when people do not even listen to 3-minute songs, Roshan replied that one day people will search for him with a lamp. His prediction came true, as the song remains iconic even today.
