Vidya Balan wishes to bring back the charm of romantic comedies with her latest venture, Do Aur Do Pyaar. The actress is thrilled to step into the world of light-hearted cinema once again.
Speaking about the film, Balan said, “This is a genre I’ve missed.” She added, “I found myself pondering why such films are scarce nowadays. The content surrounding me feels monotonous and lacks variety, particularly inundated with excessive action. Upon receiving the script for the film, I was immediately captivated by the concept. After watching the original film, The Lovers from 2017, I appreciated the fresh perspective our team brought to the project. Under Shirsha’s direction and Supratim Sengupta’s script, we’ve crafted a narrative that diverges significantly from its source material. This film brings genuine laughter and warmth to my heart. I yearned for a tranquil drive, accompanied by music, alongside Siddharth [Roy Kapur, husband]. Enough of pointless maar dhaad and diabolical people! I want to do films that offer enjoyment, both for myself and for audiences.”
Balan’s character, Kavya, embodies a woman with agency, a departure from conventional portrayals of female leads in Hindi cinema. “Kavya and her partner have an equal marriage,” Balan explains. “She is stubborn and angry, unapologetic about her affair. Her predicament is funny, yet tinged with curiosity, fear, and confusion.”
Vidya Balan Says Women Are Either ‘Bitch’ Or ‘Bechari’ In Indian Cinema
Reflecting on the representation of women in Indian cinema, Balan advocates for more nuanced portrayals. “In films, there is either the bitch or the bechari,” she remarks. “I’ve never done films with such black-and-white parts. It’s time to reimagine the women we are writing.”
Despite the industry’s evolving landscape, Balan believes there’s still room for growth in women-led cinema. “Women-led cinema is in a nascent stage here,” she observes. “It’s time to expand the idea of a badass woman and take ourselves less seriously.”
