Drishyam Spanish Remake Locks June Shoot, Producer Confirms Spanish Director And Top Cast

Drishyam is officially taking another big international leap. Nearly two years after the overseas remake rights of Drishyam and Drishyam 2 were acquired for multiple territories, the Spanish adaptation has now moved into active production. The latest confirmation came from producer Rodrigo Espinel, who revealed that filming on the Spanish remake will begin in June, giving the much-loved thriller franchise its next major global chapter.

Spanish Adaptation Moves Into Production

Speaking at the ongoing International Film Festival of Delhi, Espinel confirmed that the project is no longer just in development. “It’s an interesting story because my partner is a Mexican producer who bought the IP rights, and he called us because Spain has wonderful tax incentives. The concept can be adapted perfectly to Spanish culture. So, we have now started working on it, and we are going to start shooting next June. It has a Spanish director and a top Spanish cast,” he said.

He also explained why Drishyam lends itself so naturally to a Spanish setting. “In the end, it is the story of a father who tries to protect his daughter, and a mother who tries to find where her son is, so it becomes easy to adapt. I think as a producer, if you try to adapt a very local movie, it’s difficult. Even if we adapt the story, the soul of the film is lost. In this case, even though it is a very Indian movie, it’s easy to adapt and connect with our audience.”

The update follows the announcement made in February 2024, when Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak acquired the international remake rights to Drishyam and Drishyam 2 from original producers Aashirvad Cinemas. At the time, remakes in the USA and Korea were already being developed, while the Spanish deal was being finalised.

Why Drishyam Travels So Well

The Hindi Drishyam, released in 2015, was directed by Nishikant Kamat and starred Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran and Ishita Dutta. It was the official remake of the 2013 Malayalam film of the same name led by Mohanlal. The story follows an ordinary father who constructs an extraordinary cover-up to protect his family after a crime pulls them into a dangerous confrontation with the police.

Its sequel, Drishyam 2, arrived in 2022 with the principal cast returning, alongside Akshaye Khanna. Directed by Abhishek Pathak, the film reinforced the franchise’s popularity and proved that the suspense-driven world of Drishyam still had strong audience pull. That enduring emotional core now appears to be the key reason the story continues to cross languages and borders with unusual ease.

With the Spanish version set to roll cameras in June, Drishyam has now strengthened its position as one of Indian cinema’s most exportable thriller properties.
