The big Dussehra holiday is here, and all eyes are on the new Bollywood release, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. Starring the fresh pairing of Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, this romantic comedy is set to hit theatres tomorrow, October 2nd. Trade experts are predicting a decent start for the film, with opening day collections expected to be in the ₹10-12 crore range.
Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the film is aiming to attract family audiences during the festive period. While it’s the only major Hindi film releasing this week, it faces a big challenge at the box office.
Advance Bookings And Opening Day Expectations
The advance bookings for the film have been on the slower side. As of Wednesday afternoon, the movie had sold over 40,000 tickets, collecting an advance gross of ₹1.17 crore. However, for a romantic comedy, these numbers are considered respectable as such films usually depend on positive reviews and word-of-mouth to pick up after release. Trade analysts expect a late rush in bookings to push the total advance collection past the ₹2 crore mark.
Given the Dussehra holiday, most experts are confident that the film will open to a net collection of between ₹8 crore and ₹12 crore, with a start of over ₹10 crore being a strong possibility.
A Crucial Opening For Varun And Janhvi
A ₹10+ crore opening would be a positive result for both Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor. For Janhvi, this opening would comfortably beat her previous film, Param Sundari, which had an opening day collection of ₹7.25 crore. For Varun, the film has a good chance of earning more than his last release, Baby John, which opened at ₹11.25 crore. A strong start will be a great boost for the popular young stars.
The Kantara Chapter 1 Challenge
The biggest hurdle for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is the massive competition from the Hindi-dubbed version of Kantara: Chapter 1. The original Kantara (2022) was a surprise blockbuster in the Hindi markets, and the excitement for its prequel is very high. Many in the industry believe that the Kannada epic will give the Hindi rom-com a tough fight and could even end up earning more at the box office on its opening day.
The film, produced by Karan Johar and also starring Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf, will need strong reviews from the audience to build momentum over the long weekend.
