Global music icon Ed Sheeran is no stranger to India, and his love for our country’s films and music just keeps growing. In a recent interview, the singer-songwriter gave a massive shout-out to Bollywood and, specifically, to the Badshah himself, Shah Rukh Khan. Sheeran expressed his deep admiration for the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om with a comparison that has fans buzzing.
Speaking with DJ Zane Lowe on his YouTube channel, Ed talked about the joy of discovering Indian movies. He explained that recommending a film like Om Shanti Om to someone new to Bollywood is a huge cinematic experience, and his analogy for it was simply perfect.
‘Like Watching Star Wars For The First Time’
Ed Sheeran compared the experience of watching Om Shanti Om to introducing someone to the legendary film series Star Wars. He explained, “It’s like a really big Shah Rukh Khan movie, and it has amazing songs and dances in it.”
He continued with his unique comparison, saying, “This is a weird analogy, but it is almost like introducing Star Wars to someone for the first time, and they just go like, ‘What… is this?’” He was amazed by the scale and the presence of superstars who sing in different languages within the same country, highlighting the unique flavour of Indian cinema.
Ed’s Love For India’s Diversity
The singer also reflected on his tour of India, which he originally undertook to shoot a music video. He recalled how the team decided to travel across the country to capture its essence. Ed was fascinated by the incredible diversity he witnessed.
“I love that every hundred miles, the culture, language, food, fashion, rhythms, and all of it changed,” he shared. “Everywhere we went something was more interesting. There are also talents there that have existed for decades that you would not know about.” His comments show a genuine appreciation for the rich and varied culture of India.
The SRK-Ed Sheeran Connection
Ed’s admiration for Shah Rukh Khan is well-documented. During his recent visit to India, he met SRK at his home, and the superstar even made a special appearance in the music video for Ed’s song, Sapphire. That track was a collaboration with the beloved Indian singer Arijit Singh.
Interestingly, Ed also revealed that he became a fan of Arijit Singh after hearing his iconic song Tum Hi Ho while watching the movie Aashiqui 2. It’s clear that Ed Sheeran has a deep and growing connection with the Indian entertainment industry.
