Ekta Kapoor Confirms The Dirty Picture 2, Says ‘I’m Planning It After 15 Years’

More than a decade after The Dirty Picture stirred conversation with its unapologetic gaze at fame, sexuality, and public judgment, Ekta Kapoor has sprung a surprise sequel announcement that instantly puts the franchise back in the spotlight. The producer has now confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in the works, signalling a return to one of the boldest titles associated with her banner.

Ekta Kapoor Opens Up About The Dirty Picture 2

Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Ekta said, “One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell. The Dirty Picture was about Silk Smitha. It was about a woman who was condemned for standing up against her sexuality. Ab sexuality is about your choice. Maine kabhi usse victim ki tarah nahi dekha. I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well.”

That statement offers the strongest clue yet about how Ekta is approaching the sequel. Her emphasis is not on repeating the original, but on revisiting that world with a different social context and a story she believes is worth telling now.

What Is Known About The Sequel So Far

Ekta indicated that the new film will again draw from the life of a prominent personality, much like the 2011 original did with Silk Smitha as its inspiration. She did not reveal the identity of that figure, and there is still no official word on the cast, director, or release date.

For now, the project remains under wraps beyond its central creative intent. What is confirmed is that the sequel is being developed from a fresh point of view rather than as a straightforward extension of the first film’s narrative.

Why The Original Film Still Matters

Released on December 2, 2011, The Dirty Picture was directed by Milan Luthria and written by Rajat Aroraa. The film starred Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Tusshar Kapoor, and was produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor. Inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, it charted the rise and isolation of a woman navigating desire, stardom, and moral policing in the film industry.

Vidya Balan’s performance became the pulse of the film, helping turn it into one of the most discussed Hindi releases of its year. Its writing and provocative framing gave it staying power, and that legacy now forms the backdrop to Ekta’s latest move.

Why This Return Matters Now

That history is exactly what makes this sequel announcement timely. Ekta’s own framing suggests she is not simply reviving a known title, but re-entering a space that once challenged how female sexuality was portrayed on screen. Her line, “Ab sexuality is about your choice,” points to a sharper contemporary lens, and hints that The Dirty Picture 2 may explore a very different kind of public woman than the first film did.

Ekta Kapoor delivered two back to back hits in 2026 with Bhooth Bangla and The Vvaan.

Until more details are unveiled, the intrigue lies in that shift in perspective. Fifteen years after the original story world took shape, Ekta Kapoor appears ready to revisit it with a new subject, a new moment, and a new conversation at its core.
