Group Singled Out For An Open Letter That Acknowledged The Film’s Themes Of Empathy, Inclusion and Social Impact

A recent public request by the Elite Games Federation has attracted attention online as the organisation formally requested the Government of Maharashtra to waive the tax on Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par for the whole state. The federation praised the film’s thoughtful treatment of issues related to intellectual and developmental disabilities and termed the film a “heartfelt tribute” and worthy of greater access.

“As Film That Fuels Inclusivity & Awareness”: Federation’s Open Letter Go Viral

Taking to social media and formal channels, the Federation said:

“This is not simply a film or cinematic project but a sincere tribute to individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities that raises awareness, helps foster empathy & promotes inclusivity that we should all value and support in our society.”

The Elite Games Federation is a registered non-profit primarily under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and is well documented for its efforts to promote inclusivity in sports and support para-athletes in their sport at the national level.

Their letter not only commended the film’s narrative complexity but also denoted that it offered educational value.

“The announcement of it being tax-free in Maharashtra will ensure that it reaches a larger audience and all forms of the audience including schools, colleges, NGOs and families that can get a message from the film,” it said.

Sitaare Zameen Par: A Film That Shows Society Through Sports

Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by R. S. Prasanna and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, released in cinemas on June 20, 2025 and is already causing a stir with its feel-good yet socially sensitive storytelling. Sitaare Zameen Par is inspired by the 2018 Spanish hit Champions and is being seen as a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par (2007).

The plot follows Gulshan, a passionate basketball coach played by Khan, who is sentenced to community service to coach a team of special needs athletes. The film presents a deeply personal journey of redemption, connection, and empathy.

After Positive Reviews and Optimism For a Government Decision

The response to Sitaare Zameen Par has been very positive, assuredly not only from critics and audiences, but educators and advocacy groups have responded positively as well. The fact that the Elite Games Federation has appealed for a tax-free status lends more urgency to a public conversation about sport in society, especially with the growing reach of this film.

While there has been no official announcement from the Maharashtra government, movement around a tax-free status is certainly gaining momentum on social platforms as hashtags such as #TaxFreeSZP and #CinemaForChange are sporadically trending.
