If feminism had a face it would be as beautiful as Vidya Balan. She is the one of few actresses in the industry who has the capability to run the film on its own. From The Dirty Picture, Kahaani series, Ishqiya, Begum Jaan, Tumhari Sulu, to Shakuntala Devi, Vidya has proved why she is the epitome of talent and beauty.

Vidya Balan starrer Shakuntala Devi has released on Amazon Prime today and even if it didn’t get a theatrical release, the actress is very happy that the film is now easily available to watch.

Recently we had an exclusive chat with the actress and talked about how different she is from Shakuntala Devi, her reaction to people views on trailer, her message to the young talents, etc.

  1. Your trailer is getting a lot of appreciation and the dialogues are being loved by the audience, how do you feel about it? Were you expecting this?

No, I was hoping people would like it because it was a good trailer. But I didn’t expect this kind of response. The moment it was out so many people watched it and I guess it is also because people are hopeful. The kind of reactions I got were unbelievable and I am so happy.

  1. Apart from a mother, how important do you feel a father’s role is in a person’s success, as your father has always stood by you in your life?

I think both parents equally have a huge contribution to make in how a person turns out. I think both my parents have contributed immensely in my life. However there is a third person in my life, my sister who is four years elder to me but she has always been like a mother to me. I don’t think what I have done without them.

  1. What is your favorite l, biopic or a fictional film?

Both! Whichever is exciting. I like doing exciting characters. And when there is something new where there is a chance to do a fresh story that’s what excites me. Of course with biopics there is a certain responsibility because it’s a real person but that is also fun. Getting into the skin of the character and making sure the balance is all that is great.

  1. When the decision was made to release the film on OTT, were you okay with it?

Of course, we made the film for the big screen but God knows when the theatres will open. It will take a while for things to normalise. Our film was ready, and I felt like wow! it is such a great opportunity. Amazon Prime Videos is in 200 countries and territories. So the film will be released across these countries, I think it’s great. You watch the film at home with your loved one safely. Since the content of the film is something you can watch with your family. Since a lot of content on OTT are not family watch.

  1. How different is Vidya Balan from Shakuntala Devi?

I think I am bold and brave but she was much bolder and much braver than me. That is definitely a difference. Because I am trying to live life in my own terms but she did it way back in time. When there was no awareness for women to do what they want. She has an incredible journey and she is an inspiration.

  1. Shakuntala Devi used to say, No one challenges me, I challenge myself. What do you have to say about it?

That’s true. I don’t think anybody had the guts to challenge her. And for me also I don’t compete with anyone I am only competing myself. So I challenge myself to do better each time. So, that is probably the similarity between the two of us.

  1. What do you want to say to the people from outside who want to enter the industry but afraid due to the current situation?

Actually I don’t have a message or advice. I would say from my experience that the industry is a beautiful place that offers opportunities to anyone with talent and who is willing to work hard. Yes! you require a lot of patience, you have to be strong because it’s a very comparative place. But if you have fate in yourself then the world is your Oyster.
