Vikram Vedha stars Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Rohit Saraf and Radhika Apte. It is directed by Pushkar-Gayathri. Vishal and Shekhar have worked on its music. It has reportedly been made with a budget of 175 crore. It is said to be a remake of a Tamil film released in 2017. It was released in theatres on September 30, 2022.
Speaking of Drishyam 2, directed by Abhishek Pathak, it stars Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Tabu, Akshaye Khanna and Ishita Dutta. It’s produced by Panorama Studios and has almost the same cast return for the sequel after hit part one. It was released in theatres on November 18, 2022.
Take a look at the three key differences that led to such a drastic difference in the result:
- Original remake release
The original version starring R. Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi, Shraddha Srinath released in 2017. The Tamil language action-thriller film is directed by Pushkar-Gayathri and produced by S. Sashikanth under his banner YNOT Studios, whereas Drishyam 2 released in 2021 starring Anjali Nair, Mohanlal, Esther Anil, Murali Gopy. The drama-crime thriller is directed by Jeethu Joseph in Malayalam. 5-6 years delay in remake makes it stale while a shorter period of 1 year or so keep things fresh.
- Language and Medium
Vikram Vedha is available in Hindi on satellite and YouTube, with its dubbed version by Goldmines, whereas Drishyam 2 is neither available in Hindi nor satellite. Subtitle is still big barrier for masses and limits consumption of content.
- Sequel and fan base
Vikram Vedha didn’t have a fan base in large numbers which could had created anticipation since Drishyam 2 has a sequel advantage, making fans wait for another round of twists and surprises.
Overall making remake needs deeper analysis of cultural connect, freshness and relevance.
