Ketan Mehta, filled with joy, joyfully recounted his personal recollections of Maya Memsaab (1993), a film that recently marked its 30th anniversary on July 2. The movie, featuring Deepa Sahi, Shah Rukh Khan, Farooq Sheikh, and Raj Babbar, was truly revolutionary and anticipatory, surpassing the trends of its era. Even now, it holds a special place in people’s hearts, evoking fond memories and admiration.
At the end of the exclusive interview with an entertainment portal, the acclaimed filmmaker was asked about his upcoming plans. He mentioned that it was too early to share details, but he revealed that he is currently working on two scripts. He mentioned that he doesn’t usually make many films, but he admitted that he is eager to start working on a new film now.
Approximately two years ago, Ketan Mehta expressed his intention to create a film centered around the life of Usha Mehta, Around the same time, another project titled Ae Watan Mere Watan was announced, also based on Usha Mehta’s life. This film, produced by Karan Johar‘s Dharmatic Entertainment, features Sara Ali Khan and is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video. Ketan Mehta mentioned, “Unfortunately, our plan couldn’t materialize as someone else had already initiated production on the same subject when we decided to pursue it.”
Regrettably, Ketan Mehta has encountered a recurring situation for the third time. On each occasion, he announced plans to create a period film highlighting the life of a renowned figure, only to find that someone else had a similar idea. The film Rang Rasiya (2014), which revolved around Raja Ravi Verma, faced delays and rumors circulated about other projects being developed by the artist.
In 2015, following the release of his film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, Ketan Mehta disclosed his intentions to make a film portraying the remarkable story of Rani Lakshmibai, with the intention of casting Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. However, the project eventually materialized under a different group of individuals, resulting in the film Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi (2019). In May 2017, Ketan Mehta openly criticized Kangana, stating, “Her actions are unacceptable. She has appropriated my project, which I dedicated over a decade to.”
During the episode, Ketan Mehta expressed deep regret and sadness, describing the situation as highly unfortunate and disheartening. He emphasized that a significant amount of effort had been invested in the project, but the final outcome was, in his opinion, extremely disappointing.
There were allegations that Kangana Ranaut, after replacing director Krish, made substantial changes to the first half of the film. However, Ketan Mehta clarified that the alterations went beyond just the first half. According to him, the entire script underwent changes. He mentioned that his original project was an international co-production that focused on the British Generals’ obsession with capturing the Rani of Jhansi, presenting a more balanced perspective. In contrast, Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi took on a jingoistic and nationalistic tone.

Ketan Mehta On Captain Vyom Revival
In the final moments of the conversation, there were speculations about the revival of the sci-fi TV series Captain Vyom, which was originally directed by Milind Soman under the guidance of Ketan Mehta. Before concluding, Ketan Mehta provided an update, confirming the plans for its revival. He mentioned that there has been a recent surge of interest in Captain Vyom, with some expressing a desire to adapt it into a film. However, their aspiration is to transform it into an animated television series.
