The filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap recently took to Instagram to criticise the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Brahmin community over the ongoing controversy surrounding the biographical drama Phule. The movie is set to release on April 25.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Phule stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa as Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film was initially slated for release on April 10, but after backlash from the Brahmin community, the release was delayed. The CBFC demanded several changes, including the removal of terms like “Mahar,” “Mang,” “Peshvai,” and “Manu’s system of caste,” leading to a heated debate.
Anurag Kashyap Calls Out CBFC For Blocking Release Of Phule
Kashyap has now addressed the issue on social media. Taking to his Instagram, he wrote, “Punjab 95, Tees, Dhadak 2, Phule- I don’t know how many other films are blocked that expose the agenda of this casteist, regionalist, racist government is blocked who is so ashamed to see their own face in the mirror. So, ashamed that they can’t even openly talk about what it is about the film that bothers them, F….ing cowards.”
The filmmaker also raised a crucial point about the censorship process. He questioned how certain groups gain access to films before their official release. “My question is, when the films go for censoring, there are four members in the board. How the fuck do the groups and the wings get access to films and unless they are given access to it? The whole fcking system is rigged,” he said.
Filmmaker On Hypocrisy Around Caste System In India
Kashyap didn’t stop there and also called out the hypocrisy around caste in India. Referring to the censoring of Dhadak 2, he wrote, “Dhadak 2 ki screening mein censor board ne bola, Modi ji ne India mein caste system khatam kar diya hai. Ab Brahmin ko problem hai Phule se. Bhaiya, jab caste system hi nahin hai to kahe ka Brahmin. Kaun ho aap? Aap ki kyon sulag rahi hai?”
He continued, “Jab caste system tha nahin toh Jyotiba Phule aur Savitri Bai kyon the. Ya toh aap ka Brahminism exist hi nahin karta, kyunki Modi ke hisaab se India mein caste system nahin hai? Ya sab log milke sab ko c*****a bana rahe ho. Bhai mil ke decide kar lo, India mein casteism hai ya nahi. Log chutiya nahin hain.”
Other filmmakers, like Anubhav Sinha, have also talked about the issue. The director of Thappad took to Instagram and asked, “Is there no caste system in society? Has it never existed? Why should we lie to ourselves? And then, why should only cinema be the one to lie?”
