Ameesha Patel is revisiting the towering legacy of Gadar with a claim that is bound to spark fresh box office debate. As Gadar: Ek Prem Katha completes 25 years on June 15, the actress said the combined theatrical footfalls of Gadar 1 and Gadar 2 were higher than those of Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar films.
Speaking while reflecting on the staying power of the franchise, Ameesha said, “We’ve come on this journey 25 years later, and we’re still iconic. We had a part two that created a tsunami at the box office and became iconic. And combined, Gadar 1 and Gadar 2 have the biggest footfalls, more than even Dhurandhar 1 and 2.”
She further underlined that her point was about audience turnout in cinemas. “Just purely on footfalls, that means the number of people who have actually entered cinema houses to watch both films, is so heartening. To feel that I am part of cinematic history, to be privileged, to be blessed.”
Ameesha Patel On Gadar’S Day One Frenzy
The actress also looked back at the original film’s opening and the frenzy around its release in 2001. Recalling how quickly the scale of the success became apparent, she said, “It became the biggest hit on the first day of release itself because it got 100% opening all over India, single screens. They just lapped it up. It was a single-screen audience. And it was such a hectic time because in those days, actors used to do five films at a time in a year.”
She added, “So I was juggling between set to set of other films. And I didn’t even have time to digest what a humongous, monstrous hit it had become.”
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha starred Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in a Partition-era love story that went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s defining blockbusters. The film followed Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, and Sakina, a Muslim woman from an aristocratic family, whose romance unfolds amid the violence of 1947. In Gadar 2, released in 2023, Tara returns to Pakistan, this time to rescue his grown-up son Jeete.
