Taapsee made these remarks in an interview with Suchin Mehrotra during the promotions of Gandhari. Looking back at the phase in which she began building her Hindi film career, she said, “Was that a dream era? Someone like me wouldn’t have a career if this was the time where only this kind of stuff was getting made. I am too privileged I think, looking back. That I had the liberty to start at that point.”
She then explained how some recent releases left her questioning whether she still fits into the current mainstream mood. “Few days back, I had a conversation with my family back home and I was looking at some of the films releasing… last couple of months. I was like, ‘Retire hone ka time toh nahi aa gaya hai kahi (Is it time for me to retire)?’ because I will prefer retiring than doing those kinds of films, because I am sure the films can have their audience.”
What matters to her most, Taapsee said, is the body of work she leaves behind. “I love my job but I don’t love my job blindly to be doing those kinds of films and I firmly believe there is a filmography. Times will change but the filmography will not change. Ten year after the genre will change but my films will stay and if someone checks what she had done, I don’t want to be embarrassing to me or anyone attached to me. So I will probably hold my filmography closer to me than the times.”
That sentiment flows directly into Gandhari, a project that fits the kind of role selection she has defended so strongly in public.

Gandhari premiered on Netflix on September 3, 2026. Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, the film places Taapsee at the centre of an emotionally charged thriller set in the fictional town of Joypurra. The cast also includes Ishwak Singh, Jatin Sarna, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Chhaya Kadam.
The story follows a blind mother navigating hidden truths, mounting danger and unexpected allies. Ishwak plays Gokul, a father grappling with his daughter’s disappearance, while Jatin Sarna plays Kabir, the officer leading the investigation into missing girls.
Taapsee Pannu’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Taapsee’s recent filmography makes her latest comments feel consistent rather than sudden. In 2023, she was seen in Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki opposite Shah Rukh Khan. In 2024, she returned to Netflix with Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and also appeared in the ensemble theatrical release Khel Khel Mein.
