David Dhawan Hints At Retirement, Says Varun Dhawan Starrer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai May Be His Last

David Dhawan has attached unexpected emotion to Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai by calling it the film that may mark the end of his directorial journey. For a filmmaker whose comedies helped define a major stretch of mainstream Hindi cinema, that single admission has instantly turned the Varun Dhawan starrer into one of his most personally resonant projects in years.

The veteran filmmaker made the revelation during an interaction with ANI, where he spoke with unusual candour about where he stands today. “I don’t think I should do more. This might be my last film. After this, I’ll just be Varun’s father,” he said, a line that has quickly reframed the conversation around the upcoming entertainer.

David Dhawan’S Retirement Remark Changes The Conversation

Dhawan also shared that making Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai came with personal challenges. “I was very unwell during the shooting of this film. Varun took great care of me, he had all doctors’ numbers, stayed in touch with them, and was always there. He’s a complete family man,” he said.

Even in that warmth, the director stressed that sentiment does not shape his process on set. “When I’m behind the camera, he’s not my son, he is an actor. I just need the result,” Dhawan said, underscoring the discipline that has driven his long run in commercial Hindi cinema.

He also reflected on a very different filmmaking culture from an earlier era. “In our time, films were made on trust. Even actors like Salman Khan or Govinda or Sanjay Dutt didn’t always hear full scripts. We narrated scenes, and that’s how films were made,” he said.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Release Date And Cast Take Center Stage

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is directed by David Dhawan and stars Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, Mrunal Thakur and Maniesh Paul. The film is scheduled to release in India on May 22, 2026, placing it among the notable Hindi theatrical titles still to arrive this year.

That release now carries added weight because the film arrives with David Dhawan himself framing it as a closing chapter. For audiences that have long associated his name with unapologetically big, broad entertainer fare, the project now feels charged with a farewell note before it has even reached cinemas.

Varun Dhawan’s Recent And Upcoming Work

For Varun Dhawan, the reunion with his father comes at a moment when his screen choices have grown more varied. After balancing the relationship drama of JugJugg Jeeyo and the creature comedy Bhediya in 2022, he moved into the more intense emotional space of Bawaal in 2023, then returned with Baby John and the streaming series Citadel: Honey Bunny in 2024.

That run has shown an actor trying to stretch beyond the easy familiarity of his early commercial image, which is precisely why Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai lands with such a full circle pull. It reunites him with the filmmaker most closely tied to his mainstream comic persona, while also carrying the significance David Dhawan himself has attached to it. Beyond this film, Varun also has Border 2 lined up for 2026, giving him another major theatrical title in a phase that blends scale, nostalgia and reinvention.
