Priyadarshan is stepping away from the comic space that came to define much of his Hindi film career and turning toward a darker, more intense register with Haiwaan. With the film releasing in cinemas on September 11, 2026, the director has openly framed it as a decisive personal and creative shift.
Speaking about that move, Priyadarshan said, “Haiwaan is the beginning of a new chapter for me, I started with serious films like Gardish, Virasat, but after Hera Pheri, I was pulled into this track of comedy films, I need a break so I thought of this film and I was very confident that this kind of a film will be very well accepted today because what I found very interesting is the reason behind of success of Bhoot Bangla, there were so many films which are too serious like Dhurandhar, Border 2, and Bhoot Bangla came as a sudden relief, because people like to watch different kinds of movies at different times, so now I feel that people have been continuously watching a lot of comedy oriented films so I think a thriller has a scope.”
With Haiwaan, Priyadarshan is returning to the zone of emotional weight and tension that shaped films like Gardish and Virasat, while also making a clear theatrical play. The film arrives at a moment when he believes audiences are ready for a thriller after a visible run of comedy-oriented releases, giving the project both a career angle and a timely commercial one.
Haiwaan Release Date And Cast
Haiwaan will release worldwide in cinemas on September 11, 2026. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in the lead, with Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar in key roles. It is produced under KVN Productions and Thespian Films by Venkat K. Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn.
The casting is one of the film’s strongest hooks. Bringing Akshay and Saif together in a dark thriller gives Haiwaan an immediate sense of scale, especially because both stars carry sharply different screen energies. Instead of leaning on nostalgia or broad humour, the film is being positioned around atmosphere, tension and a more unsettling dramatic pull.
Why The Akshay And Saif Pairing Adds Intrigue
The Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan combination gives Haiwaan an added layer of curiosity ahead of release. In a market often crowded with action spectacles and lighter entertainers, Priyadarshan is backing a more shadowy setup led by two mainstream stars, which makes the film stand apart even before its full plot is revealed.
That also strengthens the theatrical pitch. Haiwaan is not being sold as a routine star vehicle, but as a mood-driven thriller with a recognisable director making a purposeful genre turn. For Priyadarshan, that is the real headline: a filmmaker long linked with comedy is stepping back into serious cinema with two major actors at the centre of a dark, high-interest release.
Film Details And Genre
Directed by Priyadarshan, Haiwaan is a Hindi thriller scheduled for a 2026 theatrical release. Alongside Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, the film features Boman Irani, Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar. It is backed by KVN Productions and Thespian Films.
The film’s premise is being sold through its dark and atmospheric tone rather than plot-heavy reveals, pointing to a suspense-led narrative that is expected to rely on performance, mood and conflict.
