The veteran actor, known for building performances through relentless preparation, said this film pushed him to loosen up, stay alert in the moment and trust the director’s rhythm instead of clinging to a rehearsed pattern.
Boman Irani On Letting Go Of His Usual Method
Irani said Priyadarshan’s working style challenged one of his deepest habits as an actor. He shared, “As an actor, I often over-rehearse, I do the lines while wearing my socks, shaving, etc. When you get onto the floor, you have Mr. Priyadarshan telling you, ‘Just say this one time, look into the camera, and just walk off the camera.’ Then all my preparation has come to zero.”
That experience, he suggested, was not a dismissal of preparation but a reminder that technique has to remain flexible. For someone with Irani’s reputation for timing and control, the takeaway is revealing because it places responsiveness above routine.
He added, “If you are stuck to it and you are married to a method, then you are not a good actor. You have to prepare enough for the director to tell you, ‘turn it down or up a little bit.'”
