Bollywood film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making his OTT debut with the larger-than-life web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.
The show follows the stories of courtesans (tawaifs) in the Lahore red-light district of Heera Mandi during India’s fight for independence from British rule. Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Shaikh, the show focuses on the lives of the courtesans of Lahore and the life of red-light district in the undivided India.

Bhansali had described ‘Heeramandi’ as his biggest project ever during an interview with Netflix CEO, Ted Sarandos. The 8-part series is SLB’s first foray into the web series space. The trailer was released now and it has already taken people all over the world by storm. The grandeur and the opulence shown in the series coupled with the ace filmmaker’s terrific attention to detail makes the Netflix show a must watch.
Besides Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the show also has Mitakshara Kumar as the director. While the stories about the film have been going around for almost 5 years now, it was actually conceptualised around 2007-2008. The project was officially announced in 2021 with the shooting started from June 2022 and finally coming to an end after a year in June 2023.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s eagerly awaited web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, will premiere on Netflix on May 1.
The release date of the show was announced at a grand event, where the makers organised a drone light show. Through the light, they formed words such as ghungroo (anklets), jharokha (ornate window), and adaab (greeting) in the air. Sonakshi, Manisha, Sanjeeda, Richa, and Sharmin were present at the event. But Aditi skipped it amid the news of her wedding to actor Siddharth.
At the event, Bhansali said, “I am grateful to the entire team for their relentless passion and dedication to bring the world of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar to Netflix. With the release scheduled for May 1st, we can’t wait for audiences worldwide to watch it and shower us with their love and appreciation.”
The official synopsis of Heeramandi reads, “In the midst of a power struggle in Heeramandi, a young heir caught in the crossfire chooses love over succession, disrupting the status quo. Set in pre-independent India against a burgeoning freedom movement, the final thread holding the art of tawaifs (courtesans) is put to the test.”
