High Demand From Distributors Leads To Ban On Avatar: The Way Of Water In Kerala’s 400 Theatres

FEUOK (Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala) decided to prohibit the release of the Hollywood film

Avatar was first released in 2009 directed by James Caneron. The sci-fi/action movie stars Sam Worthinhton (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and others. For a corporate mission, Jake, who is paraplegic, replaces his twin on the Na’vi inhabited Pandora. It performed well at box office records worldwide, amounting to 87.8 crores USD, while the budget of it was 3.7 crores USD.

Its sequel will be released in India on December 16th, 2022 starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang from the first film, and new faces like Kate Winslet and Michelle Yeoh. The first part had a lifetime collection worth $2.8 billion. The entire collection through its re-release is $58 million.

A few days ago it was reported that 100-150 crores were cited for its theatrical release in Tamil and Telugu states. FEUOK (Film Exhibitors United Organization of Kerala) decided to prohibit the release of the Hollywood film as distributors were raising a demand of a share of 60% of the entire net income of the theatrical business in the first week after its release.

Generally, exhibitors provide 50% of the share. Although, in this case for Avatar 2, they offered 55% of the share but adamant distributors asked about 60%. Moviegoers are still hopeful that the issue will be resolved and they will be able to watch it in theatres soon.
