In some surprising news, India’s official entry to the Oscars 2026, Homebound, is facing hurdles with the censor board ahead of its Indian theatrical release. The critically acclaimed film from director Neeraj Ghaywan has been asked to make as many as 11 changes by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, which has been celebrated at international film festivals, was reviewed by the CBFC’s Revising Committee, which suggested several modifications. After the changes were made, the film was passed with a U/A 16+ certificate on September 12, 2025.
A Closer Look At The 11 Cuts
According to reports, a total of 1 minute and 17 seconds of footage has been removed from the final cut of the film. One of the most talked-about changes is the deletion of the dialogue, ‘Aloo gobhi…khaate hai’. The board also muted or replaced certain words in at least six different places.
Other changes include the removal of a two-second visual of a man performing a puja, and the word ‘gyaan’ was also replaced in the final version. Furthermore, a crucial cricket match sequence in the film has been shortened, with 32 seconds of footage being deleted from that scene alone. The exact nature of the deleted visuals has not been revealed.
A Journey Of Global Acclaim
Before facing the censor board, Homebound had already made a significant impact on the global stage. The film earned praise during its screenings at some of the world’s most prestigious events, including the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).
The film’s biggest achievement came recently when it was announced as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. This selection marked a moment of immense pride for the Indian film industry and solidified the film’s status as one of the year’s most important movies.
Team ‘Homebound’ On Oscar Selection
Speaking on the Oscar selection, producer Karan Johar expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are deeply honoured and humbled that Homebound has been selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards… Neeraj Ghaywan’s labour of love is sure to find a home in a million hearts across the world.”
Director Neeraj Ghaywan also shared his happiness, saying, “I’m deeply honoured that Homebound has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Rooted in the love for our land and our people, it carries the essence of the home we all share. To take our stories to the world and represent India at one of the biggest global stages for cinema is both humbling and a matter of pride.”
