Ibrahim Ali Khan, son of Saif Ali Khan, made his big Bollywood debut with the Netflix film Nadaaniyan. However, the film faced a massive backlash from audiences and critics. People online heavily criticised Ibrahim’s acting, his dialogue delivery, and even his looks.
There was a lot of excitement for his launch, but the film’s failure put a stop to that. Now, in a very open and honest interview with Esquire India, Ibrahim has admitted that his debut was a failure. He also shared how the brutal trolling that followed has affected him.
‘It Was A Really Bad Film’
Speaking about Nadaaniyan‘s failure, Ibrahim did not hold back. He admitted that the hype around his launch dropped significantly after the film’s release. “Not too long ago, they were all waiting for my launch, and after Nadaaniyan, the hype has dropped real bad. They’ve trolled me nonstop. ‘He won’t be able to do it only’. It’s a massive low… and I constantly feel bad about it,” he shared.
He then bravely owned the failure, stating it clearly for the record. “I’m just gonna go on record and say that it was a really bad film,” Ibrahim admitted.
How The Trolling Affected Him
Ibrahim also opened up about how much the negativity impacted him. He explained that the trolling became a trend, and people were joining in just for the sake of it. “It was really bad. It became a sort of culture to, ‘Oh, let’s troll that film’. There were people who were trolling it just because they heard that some other person was trolling it,” he said.
He called this kind of herd-mentality trolling “uncalled for.” However, he now hopes to use this experience as motivation. He said that if he delivers a blockbuster in the future, he wants the same level of intense reaction, but in a positive way. “If I now give a blockbuster in the future, I want the same kind of response. They should go mad after me,” he stated.
Rushing Into His Debut
Looking back, Ibrahim reflected on what went wrong. He said that while he didn’t take his debut for granted, he did go into it with a “Ho jaayega” (It’ll just happen) attitude. He feels he may have rushed into his first project.
“Of course, I was working very hard, like I’m still working hard on my speech issue. But in a way, I feel I must have rushed into that movie,” Ibrahim shared. He pointed out that he was only 21 when he started shooting for it, while many other actors today start at 26, 27, or 28. “I now think I could have been more mindful of the scale of what was going to happen,” he said.
What’s Next: Diler
After Nadaaniyan, Ibrahim Ali Khan also starred in Sarzameen, with Kajol and Prithviraj Sukumaran, which was released on Jio Hotstar. Now, he is fully focused on his next big project, a theatrical release titled Diler.
Diler is a sports drama directed by Kunal Deshmukh. Ibrahim sounds much more confident about this film. He said, “I’ve really sat on the script this time around. Kunal Deshmukh sir is a really experienced director. He’s very good and can present me well.”
