Inde Navarrette Lands Apple Sci-Fi Thriller The Waffle House Index And Steps Up As Executive Producer

Hollywood’s race to lock in its next breakout lead has a new headline move. Fresh off Obsession, Inde Navarrette has landed The Waffle House Index, a sci-fi thriller picked up by Apple Original Films, and the project comes with an added milestone, her first executive producer credit.

That combination makes the film more than a routine casting update. It positions Navarrette not just as the face of a new feature, but as a young actor beginning to claim creative ground behind the scenes as well. With Plan B Entertainment backing the package and Louis Paxton in the director’s chair, the Apple project arrives with serious industry weight.

The Film’s Premise And Creative Team

The Waffle House Index is based on a screenplay by Andrew Nunnelly that was featured on the 2025 Black List. The story follows a Waffle House waitress whose already brutal night shift takes a dangerous turn when a stranger carrying a gun walks in. From there, the film spins into mass flooding, killer crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a magical bunker beneath the restaurant, and aliens.

Paxton will direct after drawing attention for The Incomer, which won the Sundance Film Festival NEXT Innovator Award. Plan B, led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, is producing for Apple Original Films, giving the project a blend of prestige pedigree and full-throttle genre ambition.

Why The Title Carries A Real-World Hook

The title draws from the real informal “Waffle House Index,” a storm severity measure tied to whether the restaurant chain is fully operating, offering a limited menu, or closed altogether. That familiar disaster shorthand gives the film an immediate cultural hook before the screenplay launches into something far stranger and bigger.

For Navarrette, the role also marks a smart pivot. Even with a major franchise future already in motion through her casting as Rogue in Marvel’s next X-Men feature, The Waffle House Index keeps her rooted in original studio material with a distinctly offbeat premise.

Inde Navarrette’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Before her current film run, Navarrette built a steady screen presence with roles in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and The CW’s Superman & Lois. Her earlier feature credits also include Wander Darkly in 2020.

Her 2026 breakout arrived with Obsession, the Curry Barker horror hit that pushed her into a far bigger spotlight. Looking ahead, her highest-profile confirmed studio title is Marvel’s X-Men reboot, where she is set to play Rogue. That film is scheduled for release in May 2028, making The Waffle House Index a key bridge between her breakout moment and her next blockbuster chapter.
