Independence Day 2020: Let’s Go Back In Time & Celebrate These Iconic Films That Were Released On August 15 Creating A Mark At The Box Office

Independence Day week is a huge deal for Bollywood. Every year Producer’s eye this week to release their films. However, this year it’s quite different. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, theatres are shut. Although, some films like Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl and Khuda Haafiz has hit the OTT platform but people are missing the feel of going to the theaters and watching the film on the silver screen.

So on this Independence Day let’s do a time travel and celebrate some of the iconic films which released on 15 August and also made a blast at the box office.

Sholay 1975:

As we celebrate 45 years of this benchmark film. But did you know, originally there were talks that Shatrughan Sinha was offered to play the character of Jai, which was then played by Amitabh Bachchan. Well, all thanks to director Ramesh Sippy who zeroed Mr. Bachchan and we got this iconic film. The film earned about 15 crore at the BO back then.

Tere Naam 2003:

17 years of Salman Khan’s most loved film directed by Satish Kaushik and the story is still fresh in our minds. It was quite in the news for its ending. This film was penned by Bala and Jainendra Jain. The film which was a game changer for Salman’s career was actually based on a real-life incident of writer Bala’s friend. The film also starred Bhumika Chawla and collected 24.54 crore at the box office.

Bachna Ae Haseeno 2008:

12 years ago when the film hit the theatres everyone remembers the old song featuring Rishi Kapoor. The musical duo Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani were excited about the title but they decided not to do a remix version of it and that’s how we got a new but authentic version of Bachna Ae Haseeno. The film starred Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba in the lead roles. It was one of the hits of that year collecting 79 crores.

God Tussi Great Ho 2008:

Grabbing 20.6 crores at the box office the film was originally titled ‘God is Great’. However Salman Khan wanted to give it a desi touch and he came up with the idea ‘God Tussi Great Ho’. The film completes 12 years today.

Ek Tha Tiger 2012:

Did you know? Salman Khan was suffering from nerve disorder problems while doing the action scenes. The actor was in real pain. But, Kabir Khan and team made this useful for their film and captured Salman’s genuine expressions that shows the actor in deep pain. Completing 8 years today, the film earned a whopping amount of 320 crore at the box office back then.

Singham Returns 2014:

Marking 6 years of it’s release Singham starred Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film was a huge hit with the collection of 216.56 crore. Some shorts of the film have been shot at the Matunga bangalow of Kareena’s family. Her great grandfather, iconic actor Prithviraj Kapoor used to live in the Bunglow.

Satyameva Jayate 2018:

The film was originally titled Raakh and became 2018’s biggest opening movie. Manoj Bajpayee and John Abraham starrer collected 108 crore. The film celebrates it’s 2 years anniversary today.

Gold 2019:

The Akshay Kumar film has been shot across the UK and India, capturing the fascinating aspects of the pre-independent era. Turning 1 years today, the film was highly appreciated by the audience and earned 158.92 crore.

Mission Mangal 2019:

Completing it’s 1st year anniversary today, the film was special as it was a woman-oriented film. Starring Vidya Balan, Kirti Kulhari, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu and Nithya Menen, while Akshay Kumar starred as a supporting character. The film was originally named as ‘Mahila Mandal’. It collected 290.59 crore at BO.

Batla House 2019:

Inspired by true events the film collected 141.5 crore. John Abraham’s character in the film is inspired by Mohan Chand Sharma, the Special Cell inspector and encounter specialist who was spearheading the operation, was martyred during the encounter. The film was released exactly a year ago today.
