Manoj Bajpayee is one of the finest actors in the country, and he is also known for never shying away from speaking his mind. The actor, who is currently promoting his new film Jugnuma, has once again stirred up a storm with his recent comments about the PR culture in Bollywood.
In a recent interview, Manoj Bajpayee expressed his frustration with how easily tags like “Best Actor” and “National Crush” are handed out due to PR campaigns. His remarks have now gone viral, and many social media users believe he was taking a subtle dig at actress Rashmika Mandanna.
What Exactly Did Manoj Bajpayee Say
While speaking to the YouTube channel Humans of Cinema, Manoj Bajpayee voiced his disappointment about how seasoned actors often don’t get the respect they deserve. He said that it feels humiliating when he gives his all to a performance, only to see a new “Best Actor” or “National Crush” being promoted online through PR stunts.
Pointing towards fellow actor Piyush Mishra, he said, “It is humiliating for him who has been trained as an actor and has been acting for so many years.” He continued, “It is humiliating for me, who has been giving everything to this craft, and suddenly… the next day you read ‘best actor’. Suddenly a #BestActor comes along, then after four months another #BestActor comes, then #NationalCrush. You know, the whole culture has changed.”
Fans Connect The Dots To Rashmika Mandanna
As soon as the video clip of the interview was shared online, fans were quick to connect the dots. The tag “National Crush” is famously and widely associated with actress Rashmika Mandanna, who received the nickname from her fans a few years ago. Social media was flooded with comments from users who felt that Manoj Bajpayee’s remark was a clear shot at this trend and, by extension, at the actress herself. While he did not take any names, the specific mention of the tag made many believe it was an indirect reference.
On The Work Front
Manoj Bajpayee’s latest film, Jugnuma: The Fable, was released in theatres on September 12. The movie is set in the late 1980s and tells the story of a man in the Himalayas who must uncover the mysterious truth behind fires in his family’s orchards. Apart from this, fans are eagerly waiting for the third season of his blockbuster web series, The Family Man. The new season is expected to deal with a national security threat from China, linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
